About Tai O Village
Tai O Village, located on the western coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong, is a picturesque and historic fishing village known for its unique stilt houses, vibrant local culture, and tranquil atmosphere.
Tai O is home to the Tanka people, a fishing community that has preserved its traditional way of life for generations.
The village’s narrow lanes, bustling markets, and charming waterways offer a glimpse into Hong Kong’s past, with the smell of dried seafood wafting through the air and the sight of colourful fishing boats dotting the landscape.
Visitors to Tai O are drawn to its rich cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and the opportunity to experience a slower pace of life in contrast to the bustling city nearby.
I visited Tai O during the height of summer in June and stayed overnight at the Tai O Heritage Hotel. My visit happened to coincide with Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade, an annual tradition organised by the fishermen’s associations in Tai O.
How to Get to Tai O Village
There are a few ways to get to Tai O Village, depending on your starting point.
1. From Hong Kong International Airport
If you’re heading directly from the airport, you can take the MTR or bus to Tung Chung Town Centre and from there, take bus no. 11 to Tai O.
2. From Central
If you’re heading from Kowloon (which was the route I took), you can take the Star Ferry from East Tsim Sha Tsui Pier in Kowloon to the Central Ferry Pier on Hong Kong Island.
Follow the signs and head to Central Ferry Pier 6 to take the ferry that goes to Mui Wo Ferry Pier on Lantau Island.
In front of the Mui Wo Ferry Pier, there is a bus terminal with buses travelling to different destinations on Lantau Island. Look for Bus No. 1 that goes to Tai O Bus Terminus.
